Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church

After completing personal development graduate classes at ETSU, Munsey Memorial requested my services in October, 1999 as an external financial software consultant to analyze Shelby Church Software Systems (Shelby V5) for implementation purposes and financial data records for research of issues that delayed the computerization and paper-less office project.

Munsey Memorial is a well established non-profit religious organization that overlooks the care and concern of over 1200 members.  In brief, the project involved a review of financial data transactions, design financial system based upon reporting requirements by the finance committee, and processed one year of bank reconciliations with sweep accounts to meet auditor?s regulations for fund accounting.

The list below outlines all noteworthy accomplishments during this time:

    • Reduced financial division cost 30% and increased data accuracy 60% by implementation of paper-less office project, training financial team on new SQL software operating procedures, and converting manual accounting process to Shelby Church Financials in compliance to non-profit accounting standards per US GAAP.
    • By increased data accuracy through implementation and instruction of Shelby Church Financials revealed cash to be $1K understated. Before implementation could begin, financial reporting measures required communication between Software Programmers and Local Network Administrator for conflict issues concerning the integrity of data posted to journals during the upgrade of software versions from V.5 to 2000 and Y2K compliance issues. (Click here for Appendix 6: Software System Implementation Project).
    • Network and software compliance analysis for Y2K readiness and paper-less office project was performed to determine staffing, network and, PC requirements. The project then required departmental activities to be organized based upon software utilization and software modules.
    • Implemented routine accounting procedures as required by the software program for ADP payroll processing and internal control measures as recommended by previous audits revealing outstanding payroll checks of $3K.
    • Consulted with preschool department of data reports implementation, reconciliation, and functionality from Shelby Systems for Pro Care Software V3, that is designed specifically for nurseries and preschools.
    • Instructed new staff in basic accounting theory and practices for non-profit entities due to staff changes that occurred in the mid-stream implementation process. During the software implementation time, was interim finance manger due to staffing changes prompted by sudden staff changes.

"A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove...but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child."

"You have to know accounting. It's the language of practical business life. It was a very useful thing to deliver to civilization. I've heard it came to civilization through Venice which of course was once the great commercial power in the Mediterranean. However, double entry bookkeeping was a hell of an invention."
